MADRID
On January 31, Casa Árabe visited “La Casita,” a project built by Architects Without Borders, with the cooperation of the Al-Shorok / Amanecer en la Cañada Real Neighborhood Association. The objective of “La Casita,” opened in September, is to offer a common, multi-purpose space for meetings and activities by local residents and neighborhood associations. Amongst the neighborhood and educational activities which it began to host this year, the “La Luna” Association, made up of members of Al-Shorok, as well, offers Arabic classes given by volunteers to more than 150 children in La Cañada Real on weekends.
To provide support for the children’s Arabic classes, during their visit Olivia Orozco and Nuria Medina, coordinators of the programs for Training, Economics and Culture, made a donation of copies of the Basma method, Spanish textbooks for learning the Arabic language in primary school and Obligatory Secondary Schooling (ESO). The books, published by Editorial Akal, are the result of a project completed by Casa Árabe and the Pluralism and Co-existence Foundation. They were created with the collaboration of teachers from Casa Árabe’s Arabic Language Center. Their goal is to respond to the demand for educational materials from our country that are modern and certified for use at schools which teach this language, as well as by associations and other educational initiatives. Basma is structured into four levels (initial, and levels 1-3), each with its own textbook and exercise book, as well as teachers’ guidebooks.
The construction of La Casita, now expanded to two rooms to be able to offer classes, was done in a sustainable, low-cost manner. It can be dismantled, as it was made without bricks or concrete, and was financed through a crowdfunding campaign. It forms part of a series of actions carried out by the work group of Architects Without Borders in the Cañada Real Galiana, with the cooperation of the residents in Sector 5, Al-Shorok, Soleares and Madstock to transform one of the empty plots of land there into a space for meetings and neighborhood activities.
