Talk on Islamic finance at the IE
On March 18, the SCIEF has organized a conference on “Short-term Islamic Financial Instruments” to be given by Datuk Rifaat Ahmed AbdelKarim.

Professor Rifaat is a leader and authority in the field of Islamic Financial Services, with an acknowledged reputation in the industry at the international level, both academically and as a professional. He has played a pioneering role in the development of Islamic finance. His leadership has been materialized in the establishment of regulatory, religious, accounting, management and auditing standards in the industry, such as the development of short-term, high-quality financial instruments which facilitate the management of liquidity at Islamic financial institutions. His contributions have also been essential to positioning the Islamic Financial Services Industry (IFSI) in the global financial services world.
Professor Rifaat was the first Secretary General of both the Accounting and Auditing Organization for Islamic Financial Institutions (AAOIFI) and the Islamic Financial Services Board (IFSB). During his terms at the AAOIFI and IFSB, Professor Rifaat played a vital role in the design and development of the IFSI’s standards and guidelines, which has been a decisive catalyst in establishing and integrating these institutions into the financial services industry at the global level.
As of October 2012, Professor Rifaat took over the position of CEO at the International Islamic Liquidity Management Corporation (IILM), an international organization established in October 2010 by central banks, monetary agencies and multilateral development agencies to help with the management of liquidity at Islamic financial institutions. The contribution made by Professor Rifaat to the Islamic financial services industry, his career in the industry spanning three decades and both his work as a research professional and scholar have been awarded with many highly prestigious international awards.
