Children’s Rights Day

To mark this date, on Sunday, November 20, Casa Árabe will be joining in the activities organized by the Salamanca District Municipal Board with an oral storytelling session and a percussion circle.

Casa Árabe’s proposals are as follows:

  • Arabic percussion circle by Samir Elturky

Samir Elturky is an Egyptian musician and expert in Arabic rhythms and percussion instruments. Samir invites you to participate in his percussion circle, in a journey to the Arab world through sounds which both children and adults will enjoy alike. The workshop is open to anyone interested in Arabic beats. For those who come without an instruments of their own (darbuka, tambourine, etc.), Samir Elturky will provide some instruments or you can follow the workshop by clapping along with your palms.

Born in Cairo, Samir Elturky has spent his career as a musician and cultural producer throughout Europe and Egypt. He specializes in instruments like the darbuka, tabla, duff, bendir, doholla, djembé and riq. Since arriving in Madrid in 2017, Samir has collaborated on several cultural events with Casa Árabe and has carried out many different participatory activities for all audiences.

  • Tales from the Thousand and One Nights: Oral storytelling for family audiences by Héctor Urién.

Professional storyteller Héctor Urién will be using his voice to take us on a fictional journey with The Thousand and One Nights. Using his words and stories, Hector Urién will transport listeners, young and old, to the most evocative places from other times and distant territories.

Héctor Urién (Madrid, 1977) performs his artistic and stage work at theaters in Spain and Latin America. He has developed his own storytelling workshop in Madrid, where students and teacher come together to discover the mystery of oral storytelling. As a storyteller on stage, his most original and exciting project has to do with The Thousand and One Nights. A short, straightforward storyteller, he has taken part in several national and international festivals and co-directs the annual festival “Ávila de cuento.” He has had over ten books published, including El arte de contar bien una historia. 101 estrategias para el ‘storytelling’ (The Art of Telling a Story Well: 101 strategies for storytelling). (Alianza Editorial).
