MADRID
Seffarine takes its name from the ancient metalworking quarter in Fez, the cultural capital of Morocco, where Lamiae was born and his relatives have long been known as master metalworkers. The complex rhythms hammered by the neighborhood’s blacksmiths have been heard there since the ninth century. Fez’s medina is the largest in the Arab world and has been recognized as a world heritage site by UNESCO. As a great center of learning since medieval times, today one can go there to experience many different forms of music from classical Arab and Sufi music to all traditional Moroccan styles, including Andalusian music, jazz and so much more.
Lamiae Naki studied the music of Al-Andalus, as well as other forms of classical Arab music. She has continued to adapt her knowledge about Moroccan music to other traditions. This includes her participation in “The Silk Road,” a concert that blends music from Arabia, Persia, India and China. In 2009, she performed at the Seattle concert “Corrientes,” a fusion of flamenco and Arabic music with the Persian Shabava Ensemble. In 2012, she presented a Berber-Algerian concert with Moh Alileche in San Francisco, California. In 2012, alongside Nat Hulskamp, she set up a tribute to Camarón de la Isla titled “Viviré,” in which she sang Arabic translations of Camarón’s flamenco music with the collaboration of flamenco “cantaor” José Cortés. She has also worked with the Arabic flamenco group Aire in Vancouver, Canada. Lamiae has made recordings such as “Hora de Soñar” (“Time to Dream”) by Martin Zarzar of the famous group Pink Martini. For the movie “No plorar Mai” (“Never Cry,” Barcelona), she composed and sang the theme song for the soundtrack. In 2012, the Regional Arts Council in Oregon awarded her with a scholarship to study under the great classical Turkish singing instructor Aylin Sengun Tasci in Istanbul. Lamiae has performed at concerts in San Francisco, California; Seattle, Washington; Portland, Oregon, Vancouver, Canada; Morocco and Istanbul, Turkey.
Nat Hulskamp, a jazz guitarist, flamenco guitarist and Arabic oud player, was born in Portland, Oregon. He began his guitar studies with guitar player and composer Paul Chasman. With his love for flamenco, he began his studies with flamenco guitarist José Solano. He was fascinated by the Arab influence on flamenco and decided to study the Arabic oud in Tetouan, Morocco. He later moved to Seattle to study at the University of Washington, where he graduated with a major in Ethnomusicology, mixing jazz, flamenco and Moroccan music.
On tour, Seffarine has performed in Indonesia, Morocco, San Francisco (California), Las Vegas, Seattle, Portland, New York (USA) and Vancouver (Canada), and their next stops will be in Fez (Morocco), as well as Jerez and Madrid (Spain).
This concert in Madrid will be taking place at the Sala Juglar (address: Calle Lavapiés, 37) on Tuesday, March 29 at 9:00 p.m. and tickets are now on sale online.
