This concert by Ibrahim Maalouf, which forms part of the Cultural Season at the Institut Français (#TIFE2016), will be held on the upcoming date of July 20, as part of the Noches del Bótanico concerts, at 9:00 p.m.
Well-known in France and the rest of the world, Ibrahim Maalouf is the only trumpet player who performs Arab music with a special four-tone trumpet invented by his father. Not only should his reputation as a trumpeter be pointed out, but also as a music arranger, composer and producer.
Son of trumpeter Nassim Maalouf and pianist Nada Maalouf, he is also the nephew of writer Amin Maalouf and the grandson of Rushdi Maalouf, a journalist, poet and musicologist. He fled to France with his family in the middle of Lebanon’s civil war and grew up in a neighborhood on the outskirts of Paris.
Ibrahim Maalouf has worked with important artists from around the world, the most notable of which include Amadou et Mariam, Matthieu Chedid, Lhasa de Sela, Ángel Parra, Jeanne Cherhal, Arthur H, Marcel Khalifé and Vincent Delerm, who he accompanied on tour for the album Les Piqûres d’araignées. He has also been honored by the French government with the “Chevalier de l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres” distinction in 2014, and that same year he received the “Victoire” award in the World Music category for his album “Illusions.”
In 2015, he was nominated for a “César” award, given by the French Academy of Film, in the category of Best Original Music, for his work in the film “Yves Saint-Laurent,” directed by Jalil Lespert. His latest album, “Red and Black Light,” was published under the Impulse! label, just like his preceding album, “Kalthoum,” revealing the more electro-pop side of his work.
Cécile McLorin Salvant will be opening the concert by presenting “For One to Love,” a more intimate, confessional project that reveals the new dimensions of this young vocalist, who won the Grammy for Best Jazz Vocal Album. She is destined to become one of the greatest jazz vocalists of all time.
