Egyptian painter Mohamed Sabry passes away

His death occurred early on the morning of Tuesday, October 30 in Cairo, where the 101-year-old artist resided.

Mohamed Sabry (Cairo, 1917-2018) was a professor at the University of Helwan’s School of Applied Arts in Cairo until his death. Prior to this, he had been the exhibitions director and artistic advisor for the Egyptian Ministry of Culture’s General Arts Organization.

In the early fifties, he came to Spain through a fellowship granted by the Egyptian Ministry of Education. In our country, he became the assistant director of the Egyptian Institute of Islamic Studies, was acknowledged as a member of the San Fernando Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Madrid and was decorated with the Order of Civil Merit and the Order of Queen Isabella. He also received the medal of the Order of Sciences and Arts.

He took part in more than 80 international exhibitions both inside and outside of Egypt, and in Spain his works can be viewed at the Contemporary Art Museum of Granada, the Fine Arts Museum of Cordoba and the González Martí Museum in Valencia.

His costumbrist paintings are a reflection of both rural and urban Egyptian society. He worked extensively with pastels and oil. On the basis of his career, he received the National Award for Merit in his native country in the year of 1997.
