Premiere of “Omar,” by Hany Abu-Assad

As of July 4 at cinemas throughout Spain

ESPAñA
The film, by Palestinian director Hany Abu-Assad, tells us a story of love, friendship and loyalty in which the main characters are Omar and a young woman, who live in the occupied Palestinian territories. Jumping over the wall forms part of their everyday life, and they do it for many different reasons: work, family, survival and, of course, to meet their perfect love.

The movie was awarded with the Special Jury Prize at the Cannes Film Festival of 2013 and was nominated for Best Non-English Language Film in the 2014 Oscar® Awards. It is one of the few productions to reach us from Palestine’s incipient film scene. It was filmed by a team of people who are all from Palestine, and for most of them, this was their first contact with the world of cinema.

Plot Summary
Omar, a young baker, is accustomed to dodging the bullets of border guards when he climbs over the wall to go see Nadia, his secret love. But in occupied Palestine, he cannot love openly or wage war directly. On the other side of the wall, Omar becomes a freedom fighter who must face painful life-and-death decisions. When he is captured after an act of resistance, he begins a lethal cat-and-mouse game with the military police. Suspicions and betrayal jeopardize his relationship with two childhood friends, Amjad and Tarek, Nadia’s brother. Omar’s feelings end up as divided as Palestine. However, it is obvious that all of his actions are driven by his love for Nadia.
