ALICANTE
It is a human viewpoint of the phenomenon of migration by Spaniards to Algeria seen through photos, drawings, engravings and several documents contributed by a teacher from the Luis García Berlanga secondary school, Juan Ramón Roca, who has opened up paths to knowledge about the dramatic events and experiences unknown by most people.
The exhibition, which will be on display at the Multipurpose Building in Polop de la Marina (at Avda. Sagi-Barba), will be opening on July 15, 2015 at 8:00 p.m. It will remain open until September 15.
“Spaniards in Algeria: Graphic memory of an emigration” offers a different focus on the phenomenon of migration that makes it possible to understand human aspects of enormous importance that have gone unnoticed.
The exhibition is divided into three parts. The first, of a historical nature, examines the Spanish presence in Algerian lands as of the conquest of Oran by Cardinal Cardenal Cisneros’ troops in 1509 and until the country’s independence from France in 1962. The second part focuses on the final stage of French Algeria and is of a testimonial nature, contributed by the last pieds-noirs of Spanish origin, discussing every aspect of migrations in terms of enriching experiences, as well as other devastating aspects such as the loss of identity. The third part is a journey to today’s Algeria in search of the past and the living Spaniards who stayed there for one reason or another.
