First Alberto Elena Award for research on peripheral cinemas
The prize, for which registration will remain open until September 30,
will award the best Spanish-language works devoted to this topic.
April 10, 2015
MADRID
The prize was created with the goal of rewarding Spanish-language works involving the concept of “peripheral cinemas” and, in general, a hypothetical audiovisual periphery, with the intention of encouraging what was one of the main lines of research in Professor Alberto Elena’s work as a researcher. As part of his professional achievements, Elena also closely collaborated with Casa Árabe to help develop its film series programming.
Although the award is open to any research proposal related with a geopolitical area at the periphery or in the South (as Alberto Elena preferred to refer to these areas of film production and consumption in his most recent works) and any type of audiovisual proposal, the name of the award highlights the idea of a certain type of audiovisual production systematically pushed aside by certain historiographic currents. Although the initial terminology has been replaced (in other words no longer referring to “Third World” film, but instead to “Peripheral” Film), the truth is that the idea of “peripheral cinema” restored a whole geopolitical area which had yet to be fully integrated into the worldwide historiography of audiovisual research in Spanish.
