First International Seminar on Mediation in the Mediterranean
A gathering with official representatives from 26 countries, regional and international institutions and non-governmental organizations with experience in mediation, to improve mediation skills in the Mediterranean region.
February 05, 2013
The opening event will be held on Monday, February 11 at 10:00 by the Spanish and Moroccan Ministers of Foreign Affairs, José Manuel García-Margallo and Saad Eddine Othmani, respectively, as well as Nobel Peace Prize winner Tawakkul Karman.
This is the first in a series of events which will be held within the framework of the Spanish-Moroccan initiative whose purpose is to support the efforts of the Secretary General of the United Nations to strengthen the role of mediation as a way to resolve conflicts and, more specifically, for use as a tool to apply Resolution 65/283.
In this sense, the intention of the initiative is to complement the actions which have been adopted by Turkey and Finland, as co-presidents of the Group of Friends of Mediation, by focusing on a specific region –mediation in the Mediterranean– and improvement at that level.
The Seminar will bring together official representatives from 26 countries, as well as regional and international institutions and non-governmental organizations with experience in mediation and experienced mediators.
This Spanish and Moroccan initiative is an attempt to get the aforementioned role-players involved in reflection about the media in order to improve the national capacity for mediation in the Mediterranean through, amongst other methods, greater cooperation between international and regional role-players, on the one hand, and local role-players, on the other, as well as improving knowledge about mediation, promoting participation by women in mediation processes, and developing synergies between states and civil society.
