Fourth edition of the International Day of Diplomats

On June 15, Casa Árabe hosted the latest edition of the International Day of Diplomats, organized by the Diplomatic Coalition (DCL) within the framework of World Refugee Day, at its headquarters in Madrid.

The event “Migrants within the context of global crisis” was officially opened by Cristina Juarranz, Casa Árabe’s Programming Coordinator and Assistant Director. It included an opening speech by Juan I. Lorente González, Director of the DCL.

After this came Mohammad Rahim Peerzada, Chargé d’Affaires of the Embassy of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan, who spoke about “The growing challenge of migration and the humanitarian response in Afghanistan,” and Musa Amer Odeh, a former ambassador of Palestine in Spain, who discussed the topic of “Occupation and displacement in Palestine: a look at the prospects for stability in the near future.”

The second part of the day was devoted to UN Agencies and other leading organizations that deal with migration issues, with contributions by the Madrid Association for the Support of Syrian Refugees (which gave an overview of its activities in support of Syrian refugees in Spain), UNRWA Jordan, represented by Nicole Hashem, from the Private Sector and Foundations Area at UNRWA Jordan, who spoke about mobilizing global partners to aid Palestinian refugees; and last of all, Ramayana Mahafza, an Inter-Agency Coordination Associate at UNHCR Jordan and Ali Al-Twaiq, also an Inter-Agency Coordination Associate, who spoke about challenges in providing holistic assistance to refugees in times of crisis.

Before beginning the following section, a DCL video titled “Broken Memories” was shown.

The third part of the day was dedicated to successful models, with the example of “Jordan as a regional center for refugees in the MENA countries”; a round table discussion with the participation of Lina Maraqa, Development Program Manager at The Jordan River Foundation, and Huzama Fakher, International Relations Director at Tyiket Um Ali / Dar Abu Abdulla.

The final section of the day featured “The Case of Ukraine: Raising awareness about the growing needs of refugees and internally displaced persons in Ukraine,” a panel discussion introduced by Serhii Pohoreltsev, the Ambassador of Ukraine to Spain, with the First Secretary of the Embassy of Ukraine in Spain, H.E.Mr. Dmytro Lozytskyi.

Closing remarks on the initiatives by these humanitarian entities were made by Juan I. Lorente González, Director of the DC, who ended the day.
