Islam in the global society of the 21st century

Twenty-third International Defense Course, taking place in Jaca from September 28 to October 2

Today’s world is a global world characterized by the ease and immediacy which technological advancements provide in communications, allowing us to become aware of events taking place in the most remote parts of the planet immediately. Such easy communications, which we see as an advantage and advancement, also have a dark side, because they offer major facilities for extremist groups trying to perpetrate attacks in different parts of the world, allowing them to communicate, coordinate and even attract and indoctrinate new followers.

If you pay attention to the many news items appearing daily, of those mentioning Islam, most have a negative tone, and a considerable portion refer to terrorist attacks. Because of this pessimistic perception, we run the risk of turning against not just radical and extremist elements, but also peoples who practice a specific religion, in this case Islam.

Perhaps this is the best time to seek answers to certain questions:
 
•    What exactly do we mean when we use the term Islam?
•    How did the current situation of radicalization by certain groups come about?
•    What is being sought by and what are the beliefs of these people who prefer to kill themselves in a terrorist attack instead of living in peace? 
•    Is the real situation the way we think, or does part of our perception come from the way the media presents the information?
•    What position should today’s world take in dealing with the topic of radical Islamist terrorists?
•    What is Spain’s relationship with the Muslim world like?
•    What role does Islam play in global security?
 
These and others are the questions which the 23rd International Defense Course will attempt to answer: “Islam in the Global Society of the Twenty-first Century,” to be held in Jaca from September 28-October 2, 2015.
