BARCELONA
Next September, the Universidad Autónoma of Barcelona (UAB) will be starting its Master’s degree in Contemporary Arab Studies, a proposal intended for training experts on today’s Arab world from an innovative perspective, with a commitment to the current social reality.

Taught fully in Arabic, the Master’s degree in Contemporary Arab Studies is a pioneering academic project in Europe, open to students from both Spain and abroad who already have knowledge of the Arabic language but wish to achieve a level of C2, as measured by the Common European Reference Framework.

The main goal of the Master’s program is to offer training of excellence on contemporary Arab language, culture and societies, to provide a response to the increasing social and institutional demand for experts on today’s Arab world.

The program includes five educational modules and an end-of-degree project. Besides the module dedicated exclusively to language (Standard Arabic, Levantine, Egyptian and Moroccan, as well as sociolinguistics and teaching Arabic as a foreign language), the modules and subjects in the Master’s program reflect the main areas of knowledge within Area Studies, placing a special emphasis on contemporary affairs (Arab uprisings, Arab history and societies of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries, Arab post-modernities, etc.) and social commitment (cosmopolitanism and hybridization, queer and gender studies, the marginalized, Arab feminism, human rights, cooperation and the third sector, etc.).

It is a Master’s program consisting of 60 ECTS credits, with classes taught at the UAB’s School of Translation and Interpretation.
