Spain recognized the State of Palestine on May 28, 2024, thus ratifying the good diplomatic relations which had existed up to then. The Consulate General of Spain in Jerusalem was created in 1853 to protect and administer the assets of the Obra Pía de los Santos Lugares (“Pious Work of Holy Sites”). In addition to this function, the Consulate General is now responsible for Spain’s relations with the State of Palestine and serves as the consular office for the entire city of Jerusalem, as well as for the Palestinian Territories (West Bank and Gaza), which make up its jurisdiction.
