Meeting with the Syrian Chargé d’Affaires 

Abdullah Hallak was received by the General Director of Casa Árabe, Miguel Moro Aguilar, at the institution’s headquarters in Madrid on Tuesday, November 25. 

The two diplomats discussed the situation in the country and explored the possibility of organizing activities related to Syria and its cultural landscape throughout the upcoming months. 
Participating alongside the diplomats was Dr. Karim Alyoun Aldabbagh president of the Syrian Arab Community Association, and Karim Hauser, Casa Árabe’s Culture and International Relations Coordinator. 

After the fall of Bashar al-Assad’s regime, Spain laid the diplomatic groundwork for normalizing relations with Syria. On the one hand, through political reinforcement of diplomatic representation, with the appointment in December 2024 of a Special Envoy for Syria based in Damascus. On the other hand, it has sought a diplomatic rapprochement with the new leadership, as demonstrated by the official visit of the Minister of Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation to Damascus on January 16, 2025. The goal is to gradually re-establish diplomatic relations at the highest level between the two countries.
