Spanish-Lebanese sisters Nadia and Laila Hotait were chosen, along with nine other participants, to become winners of the Generation Award of 2015, granted by the Montemadrid Foundation.
The work by the Hotait sisters, a video installation titled “The Night Between Ali and Me,” recreates the night of the attack on the Bank of America in Beirut in 1973, before the civil war broke out in Lebanon.
This work, along with the other prize winners’, can be seen at La Casa Encendida from February 12 through April 5.
Of the 650 works submitted, the winners, who will receive an economic reward of 12,000 euros each, were selected by an international jury whose members included Nuria Enguita, co-curator of the São Paulo Biennial of 2014; Tania Pardo, an independent curator, and Francesco Stocchi, senior curator at the Modern and Boijmans Van Beuningen Contemporary Art Museum.
The Hotait sisters have been curators of two film series at Casa Árabe: EuroBa and Creation Under the Bombs.
