This double issue of Awraq (Issue 17-18), published for the first and second halves of 2018, is the result of an international congress held with the same name from September 20 to 22, 2017 at Casa Árabe’s headquarters in Cordoba, on the occasion of the institution’s tenth anniversary. This journal is rounding off a series of three issues, which have included “A Decade of Transformations in the Arab World” (Awraq, Issue 15) and “Studies on the Contemporary Arab World in Spain: Present and future” (Awraq, Issue 16), produced on the occasion of the aforementioned anniversary, as well. This issue is the result of ten years of work and one of the main lines of activity of Casa Árabe at its headquarters in Córdoba: highlighting the majorly important Arab and Islamic historical legacy of the era of Al-Andalus and promoting knowledge about the subject.

Under the academic direction of Mònica Rius-Piniés (University of Barcelona), in this issue we pass on the very relevant scientific knowledge of Andalusian scholars, and their development and continuity up to the present day.

The thematic articles are as follows: Science in Al-Andalus and Its Role as a Bridge Between Arab and European Science (Julio Samsó); The Sages of Moorish Origin and Their Contribution to Ottoman Science (Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu); Notes on Moorish Knowledge Transmission: From Arabo-Islamicized astrology to Christianized Europe (Theo Loinaz); Mathematics in Al-Andalus and Its Influence on the Maghreb (13th to 15th centuries) (Ahmed Djebbar); Islamic Astronomy Tables in Al-Andalus: Al-Juarizmi’s Sindhind Ziy (Benno van Dalen); Astronomical Instruments of Al-Andalus (Emilia Calvo); Maghrebian Perspectives on Astrology in Al-Andalus (Montse Díaz-Fajardo); Science, Religion and Culture in Al-Andalus (Mònica Rius-Piniés); Botany in Al-Andalus: A comparative study of illustrated botany works in the Maghreb and Mashreq (Mustafá Yavuz and Özlem Korkmaz); The Qibla in Medieval Cordoba and the Orientation of the Great Mosque (David A. King). In the miscellaneous subjects section, as a continuation of the main topic in this issue, we are presenting the article A possible transformation in the entrance to the maqsurah of Al-Hakam II in the Cordoba Mosque during al-Mansour’s government (Concepción Abad Castro and Ignacio González Cavero). This issue is rounded off with a review of the book by Luz Gómez (2019). Dictionary of Islam and Islamism, with a review by Jean-Pierre Filiu, professor and department head of Middle Eastern Studies at Sciences Po, Paris School of International Affairs (PISA).
