Scientific School Calendar of 2022 published in Arabic 

Casa Árabe has collaborated on a CSIC and University of León project for the translation of this educational product into Arabic in order to increase awareness about science among primary school and high school students.

For each day, the calendar includes discoveries, science and technology anniversaries and the birth dates of well-known researchers, along with scientific advancements and curiosities. The goal is to give young people a closer look at scientific culture and to present user-friendly, diverse, up-to-date references on science. It includes a teaching guide with activities that can be adapted for different courses and levels in primary and secondary schools.

One of the new features this year is an expansion of the online version of the calendar to ten languages, including Arabic, thanks to the cooperation of Casa Árabe, which took over both the translation of the calendar and its teaching guide. The print run of the calendar in the four official languages was tripled, as well, and 11,500 copies will be distributed to educational centers and scientific institutions.

According to Pablo Gutiérrez Toral, a CSIC researcher and the project’s coordinator, the goal in 2022 was to create a more egalitarian and diverse calendar, in terms of both the persons portrayed and the themes discussed (including anniversaries in the fields of biology, chemistry, ecology, astronomy, linguistics, folklore, agriculture, veterinary science and archeology). It also shows important dates related with Arab Studies and Spanish-Muslim science, in order to highlight the value held by our heritage.

The calendars and guides can be downloaded for free from the website of the IGM (Mountain Livestock Institute). These anniversaries are also shared each day on the Twitter account @CalCientifico, and this year the project also has a Telegram group. Plus, you can download ICAL files to integrate the scientific calendar into online calendars (Google Calendar, Apple Calendar and Microsoft Outlook, as well as others). In addition, you can submit proposals and suggestions by writing to the e-mail address: calendario.cientifico@csic.es.

The School Science Calendar of 2022 is a project of the Instituto de Ganadería de Montaña (Mountain Livestock Institute, or IGM), a joint center of the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC) and the University of León, with funding from the Spanish Foundation for Science and Technology (FECYT), run in conjunction with Spain’s Ministry of Science and Innovation. For the third year in a row, it has relied on the collaboration of many education professionals and other volunteers, who have helped search for anniversaries and other special dates, as well as designing the complementary activities. Among the many entities supporting the project are several CSIC delegations, centers and institutes, the Academy of the Asturian Language, Casa Árabe, the Alliance Française of Gijón, the Spanish Esperanto Federation, the PRISMA Association for Emotional-Sexual and Gender Diversity in Science, Technology and Innovation, and several Spanish universities and other public and private entities.
