MADRID
On the occasion of their visit to Spain, Casa Árabe has organized a meeting with the representatives of the executive board of the Sheikh Hamad Award for Translation and International Understanding of Qatar, for a full explanation of the details on the categories and requirements for submitting candidacies for this prize. The presentation will be taking place at the Casa Árabe headquarters in Madrid on Monday, May 23 at 7:00 p.m.
Started in 2015, the Sheikh Hamad Award for Translation and International Understanding is given for translations from Arabic into English and vice versa (categories 1 and 2), and translations from Arabic into another language and vice versa (categories 3 and 4), in addition to a fifth category, the Achievement Award, intended for individuals or institutions which have made a substantial contribution to building and consolidating a culture of peace and furthering international understanding. This year of 2016, the language selected for the third and fourth category is Spanish, and therefore three prizes will be given out for translations from Arabic into Spanish, amounting to a total of 200,000 US dollars ($100,000 for the first prize, $60,000 for second prize and $40,000 for third prize). The same will be awarded for translations from Spanish into Arabic. The time period for submitting candidacies began on May 15 and comes to a close on August 15, 2016.
Given its magnitude, the quality sought in the awarded works and the support the awards entail for the field of Spanish-Arabic translation, Casa Árabe believes it is important to contribute to increasing awareness about the award among professionals, publishing firms and translators in Spain. Participating in the presentation in Madrid are two members of the executive board, Walid Hamarneh (Associate Professor of Modern Literatures and Cultures, Richmond School of Arts & Sciences, USA) and Mujab Imam (Steering Committee, HTA & Fair Forum, Qatar).
The event will be held in Arabic and English.
Free entry until the event’s capacity is reached. Prior confirmation is required by Friday, May 20, by writing to confirmaciones@casaarabe.es
