During their meeting, held in Madrid on April 29, the two leaders reviewed the cooperation existing between the two institutions and explored ways to expand and strengthen their relationship in the upcoming months.

Algeria is a privileged partner for Spain, as they share a foundation of common interests (proximity, energy, economic issues, anti-terrorism, immigration) that underpin the strategic nature of our bilateral relationship. These relations have been laid down in the Treaty of Friendship, Good Neighborliness and Cooperation signed on October 8, 2002, and in force since 2005.

Moreover, Algeria is the leading supplier of natural gas to Spain, with which it is connected by two gas pipelines. The interest held by Spanish companies in Algeria is to achieve diversification in terms of sectors, especially construction, infrastructure and energy, which can provide significant opportunities, on a growing trend, as has also been demonstrated by the strengthening of the Algerian-Spanish Circle of Commerce and Industry.

At present, Spain is home to approximately 61,000 Algerian residents, while in Algeria there is a Spanish colony of about 1,800 residents. Nevertheless, the flow of citizens in both directions has been growing even more important, with daily air and sea connections between both countries.

The Instituto Cervantes has two branches open in Algeria, one in Algiers since 1992 and the other in Oran since 2007, with constant growth in the number of students attending classes there. These Institutes are privileged places for meeting, taking part in dialogue and sharing.
