The University of Granada is presenting the first edition of its own Master’s degree program: “Islam Today”

The University of Granada will be holding its first edition of the Master’s degree program “Islam Today: Trends in Islamic Thought and Management of Co-existence and Diversity” from November 2016 through June 2017.
“Islam Today” is a Master’s degree program created and run by the University of Granada to meet an existing need in the graduate education offerings at Spanish universities, thereby filling a demand existing to train students who are seeking a more in-depth examination of Islam as a religion (exegesis, doctrine), cultural phenomenon and social factor, as well as the topic of Islamism.
The main objective of this Master’s program is to increase awareness about contemporary Islamic thought, the history of Arab and Islamic societies and their connections within Europe and Western culture. This is done not only to provide a point of reference to a past history and legacy, but also as part of the construction of European societies through the input of knowledge and the active presence of Islam and Muslims in Europe. This Master’s program covers subjects which allow us to understand the essentials of contemporary Islamic thought. By doing so, the course materials tie in with a branch of knowledge about the Islamic world, Islamology, that has to a certain extent been marginalized in university curricula.
This Master’s degree is presented as a unique form of graduate education in Spain because of the subjects it deals with, as well as its faculty, because a large number are foreign specialists from places such as the United Arab Emirates, Egypt, the United States, Lebanon, Morocco, Mauritania, Jordan, Senegal and Tunisia. There are also representatives of civil society and Islamic authorities in Europe, as well as a good number of professors from various Spanish universities (Granada, Madrid, Alicante) in different disciplines: historians, philologists, sociologists, anthropologists, theologists, who also introduce different approaches such as that of gender and post-colonial studies.
The Master’s program “Islam Today” forms part of the program of the Chair for Studies on Islamic Civilization and Renewal of Religious Thought, run from its headquarters in Granada by the Fundación Euroárabe and MOMINOUN Foundation Without Borders for Studies and Research.
- Requirements for admission
University degree: Spanish degrees of “licenciatura,” “diplomatura” or equivalent, and/or an official Bachelor’s degree or graduate degree.
- Intended participants
University degree holders, graduates in the social sciences and humanities, educators, social workers, journalists and, in general, all those interested in gaining more in-depth knowledge of contemporary Islamic thought.
- Language of instruction
Depending on the faculty members responsible for the module in question, the courses will be given in either Spanish or Arabic. Simultaneous translation into Spanish will be offered. A bibliography of texts in English and French will be used, as well, so we recommend having the ability to read academic texts in these languages.
- Credits
Credits: 60 ECT credits divided into 54 credits in theoretical classes and practicums. Includes the completion of a Final Project which accounts for 6 ECT credits.
- Master’s program curriculum
The curriculum is divided into 12 modules (each consisting of 40 class hours). Each module covers 2 subjects. Students must complete a final project at the end of the Master’s program, which is worth 6 ECTS.
- Course schedule
The Master’s program will be held in Granada, at the headquarters of the Fundación Euroárabe, Mondays through Thursdays from 5:00 to 9:00 p.m. and Fridays from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.
