CÓRDOBA
The tour will be guided by Professor Inmaculada Serrano, who will interpret Cordoba’s heritage from a gender-based perspective. Despite the lack of women in most historical sources, their presence is essential to construct and understand the city’s history. We will get a closer look at manorial homes, old palaces, museums, courtyards, former hospitals and schools and countless city streets and squares which make up a cultural treasure trove in Cordoba’s cultural heritage.
Starting at Casa Árabe, we will visit several nearby locations which are very emblematic in the city’s history, including: the Convent of Santa Clara, Plaza Jerónimo Páez (Archeological Museum), Plaza Elieh Nahmías, Puerta del Sabat and the Caliph’s Baths.
During the tour, you will be provided with information about women who were musicians, diplomats, writers and patrons of the arts, as well as learning about several notable trades among women (copyists, secretaries, singing slaves). Not only will the era of Al-Andalus be discussed, but also the fourteenth century, the Roman era and the Renaissance.
The most notable women whom we will be discussing are: Wallada, Lubna, Aisha, Helvia Albina, Argentaria Pola and Leonor López de Castro.
