Tour of Madrid’s Arab Past

We are organizing a walking tour along with Ahora Arquitectura to discover Madrid’s Arab origins. The walk, which will explore the vestiges and influences of the capital’s medieval era, when it was known by the name of Mayrit, will take place on the upcoming date of Saturday, October 12.

July 19, 2013
Madrid was founded in the mid-ninth century (sometime between the years 853 and 865) by Emir Mohamed I of Cordoba as a military settlement, and it remained under Muslim rule until it was conquered by King Alfonso VI of Castile in 1085. Various remains of the original walled city from those two centuries are still in existence (in Parque Mohamed I and at Plaza de la Armería), in addition to certain vestiges distributed throughout the area surrounding the Almudena Cathedral (at Calle Bailén, 12) and in the Plaza de Oriente (Torre de los Huesos).

This walking tour also includes the Arab heritage present in Mudejar style architecture (Church of San Nicolás, Church of San Pedro and the Lujanes House and Tower) and includes a visit to the San Isidro Museum.

The starting point for the tour will be the San Isidro Museum-Museo de los Orígenes (at Plaza de San Andrés, 2). It will begin at 6:30 in the afternoon and will last approximately two and a half hours. Price: 5 euros.
