MADRID
In 2020, the U.N. will be celebrating its seventy-fifth anniversary. With the motto, “UN@75, 2020 and beyond,” the United Nations has launched an interactive global dialogue meant to inspire thought about the value of multilateralism, mainly among youths. Spain wants to join in and start placing the spotlight on Africa, a continent with huge opportunities and major challenges in terms of development and gender equality that can only be answered through a multilateral focus. It is not possible to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals or full compliance with Agenda 2030 at the global level without taking Africa’s viewpoint and priorities into account.

In order to contribute to this dialogue, the State Secretariat of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the European Union and Cooperation (MAEUEC) has organized a debate with the intervention of the United Nations’ Under-Secretary General and Special Adviser on Africa, Bience Gawanas; the State Secretary for Agenda 2030, Ione Belarra; the Ambassador of Kenya in Madrid, Richard A. Opembe; María Teresa Fernández de la Vega, the president of the Women for Africa Foundation, and Itziar Ruiz-Giménez, coordinator of the UAM’S African Studies Group. The event will be followed by a conversation led by the Director General for the United Nations and Human Rights of the MAEUEC, Marcos Gómez.

The event will be held on Thursday, January 30, from 5:00 to 6:30 p.m. in the Casa Árabe Auditorium (at Calle Alcalá, 62). It will be in English with translation into Spanish. In order to attend, you must confirm attendance by following this link.
