Human trafficking is a global phenomenon that affects practically every country in the world, whether as a point of origin, transit or destination. Known as the slavery of the twenty-first century, this major violation of human rights is also one of the most lucrative criminal activities worldwide, second only to drug trafficking and comparable to arms trafficking.
According to the Global Slavery Index of 2023, almost 50 million people live in situations of modern slavery on a daily basis, a figure that has increased significantly over the last five years. In Spain, the Ministry of the Interior reported that, throughout 2023, 1,466 victims of human trafficking and exploitation crimes were identified in all, 18 of them minors. In all, 409 investigations were carried out, resulting in the arrests of 923 people and the dismantling of 109 criminal groups or organizations.
These alarming figures underscore the urgency of addressing human trafficking and modern slavery. We must raise public awareness, strengthen policies for prevention, protection and prosecution of perpetrators, and provide comprehensive support to victims.
The objectives of the seminar are to:
- Raise awareness about human trafficking
- Support national anti-trafficking strategies through prevention
- Promote respect for human rights and legal mechanisms for protection and prosecution
- Raise awareness about the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in the 2030 Agenda related to trafficking
- Raise awareness about modern recruitment and exploitation mechanisms
- Encourage action and commitment from young people in the fight against human trafficking
