On Friday, June 7, as part of the activities forming part of “Casa Árabe’s Thousand and One Nights at the Book Fair,” we will be presenting this book by journalist Pilar Sampietro.

In the mind’s eye of our memory, we store bits and pieces of summers spent by the sea. Our bare feet in the breaking waves, the warm sand with drawings made by the sea salt left behind. And entering the water only to discover a crab, some shells or perhaps a starfish. Our Mediterranean means this and so much more, and during the first few years of the new century it is undergoing transformations which form part of the evolution of its cultures. From the Arab Revolutions to the hopes of refugees, and the pressure exerted on its ecosystems by climate change.

And yet there is an island. And on that island there are houses with red roofs and blue shutters. The sea crashes against the wall and feeds the algae that have taken hold on the stone. In a while the sun will light up doors and windows, and then someone will call their neighbor, because it’s time to start the journey.

The event will include the participation of author Pilar Sampietro. Introduced by: Karim Hauser, coordinator of Casa Árabe’s Cultural Programs.

Prior to the presentation, at 5:00 p.m., radio lovers will get the chance to attend the recording of a special program titled “Mediterranean,” which is open to the public, in the Casa Árabe garden.

Pilar Sampietro Sampietro is a radio journalist specializing in programs related to Mediterranean culture, focusing on ecology, climate and social crises. Since the year of 2008, she has been hosting the Radio 3 program “Mediterráneo,” a weekly one-hour which shows the reality and evolution of different sound cultures in the region. She contributes to environment blogs like El Asombrario and formerly Alterconsumismo (El País Digital). She co-authored the books El jardín escondido (The Hidden Garden, Pol·len, 2013) and La ciudad comestible (The Edible City, Morsa, 2018), in which she explores experiences and proposals for making cities greener and healthier.
