On Thursday, December 1, Casa Árabe is hosting this international seminar at its Madrid headquarters. It has been organized by the research project “Artistic Transfers in the Iberian Peninsula (9th to 12th centuries): how Islamic visual culture was received in the Christian kingdoms” (R&D&I, PID2020-118603RA-I00). Sign up here to attend.
During the main centuries of the Middle Ages a remarkable artistic permeability was seen on the Iberian Peninsula, manifested in the presence of Moorish figurative motifs and architectural resources in the art of Christian kingdoms. Sumptuous Islamic objects were treasured and reused in the north, serving as a vehicle for transmitting this visual wealth.
Despite the large number of works devoted to these exchanges, there are still many aspects and works to be studied. Moreover, the borderlands existing between Al-Andalus and the Christian kingdoms seem to have been projected into the academic realm by creating separate fields of study about Christian art and peninsular Islamic art. However, the variety and complexity of the artistic transfers to be encountered raise research-related questions that must be viewed from a broad perspectives.
This workshop was conceived as a space to present case studies for discussion from the perspective of all the fields of studied concerned, bringing together researchers from the different eras and cultural areas on the Iberian Peninsula from the ninth to the thirteenth centuries (Asturian, Mozarabic, Romanesque, Emirate, Caliphate, Taifa, Almoravid and Almohad art), educated in the fields of Art History, Archeology and History. It consists of conference panel discussions and report in which importance is placed on the duration of the colloquium and sharing research currently undergoing development.
Organized with the cooperation of Casa Árabe, under the scientific management of Inés Monteira Arias (UNED), the workshop forms part of the Research, Development and Innovation Project “Artistic Transfers on the Iberian Peninsula (ninth to twelfth centuries): how the Islamic visual culture was received in Christian kingdoms” (PID2020-118603RA-I00) (PI: Inés Monteira Arias, MCIN/ AEI 10.13039/501100011033), with funding through this project and the UNED Department of Art History.
Scientific committee: Lorenzo P. Arias Páramo (University of Oviedo); Peter C. Klein (Eberhard Karls Universität Tübingen); María Marcos Cobaleda (University of Málaga); Noelia Silva Santa-Cruz (Complutense University of Madrid); Álvaro Soler del Campo (Royal Armoury, Royal Palace Collection, Madrid); Antonio Vallejo Triano (Director of the Madinat al-Zahra Archaeological Ensemble).
