be held on December 1 at Casa Árabe’s headquarters in Madrid, is
November 5.
The submission of proposed papers must include: An abstract with approximately 500 words in the chosen language (Spanish, English, Italian or French), along with the title of the paper and a brief outline of the author’s CV (150 words), indicating his/her current academic status and institutional association, email address and telephone number.The submissions should be sent to the scientific directors of the workshop, by November 5, 2022, to the email address: imonteira@geo.uned.es
The Hispanic art of the central centuries of the Middle Ages has led to countless studies since the nineteenth century because of its extraordinary wealth and uniqueness. Since then, a barrier in disciplines has been established which has often led to separate studies of art from Al-Andalus and medieval Christian art, turning them into independent specializations. However, we can see a remarkable artistic permeability in the presence of features of Moorish origin in pre-Romanesque and Romanesque peninsular art. The complexity of these phenomena raises questions for research that demand multidisciplinary approaches and broad perspectives.
This workshop has been conceived as a space for sharing information by presenting case studies to be debated from the perspectives of all the speciality fields involved. We will be bringing together scholars who study the different eras and cultural realms of the Iberian Peninsula from the ninth to thirteenth centuries (including Asturian, Mozarabic, Romanesque, Emirate, Caliphate, Taifa, Almoravid and Almohad art), specializing in the fields of Art History, Archeology and History. In doing so, we hope to provide a two-way view of these artistic phenomena and a synergy in finding answers.
The workshop is open to free proposals for papers on the subject of artistic relations and exchanges on the Iberian Peninsula between the ninth and thirteenth centuries, which address case studies or specific topics related to transferring objects and figurative, artistic or architectural resources between Al-Andalus and the Christian kingdoms. Specific examples or cross-cutting issues related to Mozarabic miniatures and architecture, Emirate and Caliphate art, Asturian art, art of the Taifa period, Romanesque art, Almoravid and Almohad art may be dealt with. Each presentation will last 15 minutes and may be given in Spanish, English, Italian or French. After the panel, there will be time for debate.
Organized with the cooperation of Casa Árabe, the workshop forms part of the research, development and innovation project “Artistic Transfers on the Iberian Peninsula (ninth to twelfth centuries): receiving Islamic visual culture in the Christian kingdoms” (MCIN/ AEI, PID2020-118603RA-I00).
