TICKETS SOLD OUTWith Jordanian violinist Layth Al-Rubaye and Palestinian cellist Naseem AlatrashFebruary 11 in Madrid and February 12 in Cordoba
The Berklee Mediterranean Music Institute and Casa Árabe have started collaborating to present recitals by young Arab musicians at Casa Árabe’s headquarters. The first of these concerts will be taking place on the upcoming dates of February 11 in Madrid, and February 12 in Cordoba, with a performance by two of the most notable students at the Berklee College of Music: Jordanian violinist Layth Al-Rubaye and Palestinian cellist Naseem Alatrash.
Both Layth and Naseem are now completing their studies with a full scholarship at the Berklee College of Music in Boston, and they already have a lengthy musical career behind them. Recently, Javier Limón, captivated by their talent, invited the two youths to take part in his latest album, “Promesas de Tierra,” an avant-garde musical project that combines elements from Arab, Christian and Sephardic culture: the foundations of Flamenco and classical music from Al-Andalus.
Bringing Layth and Naseem together on stage results in a passionate performance that combines deep musical traditional influenced by classical and contemporary jazz, in an association which highlights their unique instrumental skills. Their music is an exceptional experience for any listener.
The event will be presented by Eduardo López Busquets, the General Director of Casa Árabe, and Javier Limón, a musician, composer and art director from the Mediterranean Music Institute.
Layth Al-Rubaye
Of Jordanian nationality but born in Iraq in 1992, this youth comes from a family of musicians. His father, Mohammed Sidiq, is a pianist and composer who currently directs the Symphonic Orchestra of Amman, in which his mother also participates as a violinist.
He has played at many festivals and with orchestras from around the world, in Germany, Holland, Lithuania, England, Bahrain, India, Lebanon, Jordan, the United States, Greece, Egypt, Cyprus and Syria. In 2008, Layth entered the Chetham Music School in Manchester, England.
Layth is currently a student of the Berklee College of Music with a full scholarship. He expects to earn his degree in Interpretation and Direction. Layth studies the violin with an Arab musician known throughout the world, Simon Shaheen.
Nasseem Alatrash
Born in Palestine in 1991, Mr. Alatrash received his first cello lesson at the age of twelve and soon joined the Palestine Youth Orchestra, in which he was made the first-chair cellist, then touring throughout Jordan and Palestine. He later became a member of the National Orchestra of Palestine. In 2012, he was chosen to take part in a tour by the World Orchestra of Aldeburgh through Europe, under the direction of Sir Mark Elder. The Orchestra held performances at the Royal Albert Hall in London, the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam and the Audi Festival in Ingolstadt, Germany.
At Berklee, he was selected to play with renowned international musicians such as Ron Carter, Simon Shaheen, Javier Limón, Café Di Silva and Jorge Drexler.
Naseem is currently completing his third year at the Berklee College of Music, with a full scholarship to study there and carry out his studies on cello interpretation.
This concert forms part of the musical program which Casa Árabe has been putting on over the last seven years, a program through which it seeks to increase awareness of contemporary Arab music and fusions, presenting the most important and innovative Arab musicians in today’s music scene to the Spanish public. Young musicians Layth Al-Rubaye and Nasseem Alatrash are therefore joining a long list of performers who have taken part in Casa Árabe’s music programming, including the acclaimed Simon Shaheen, Naseer Shamma, Rabih Abukhalil, Idir and Cheika Zahouania.
