before the workshop is full.
As part of our collaboration with FLIPAS, the Fourth Laboratory of Urban Cultures, and with the support of the Belgian Embassy, Casa Árabe is hosting this ten-hour urban movement workshop for those over the age of 16.
The workshop will begin with a technical course that deals with verticality, alignment, floor technique and supports, discovering the body and the existing anatomical potential, as well as the body as a material in and of itself (technical course that will make it possible to continue work throughout the week).
It will consist of two parts: physical work on the notion of the core, contact improvisation and rhythm. Work will be done individually and in groups: instantaneous composing that takes into account the notion of space and listening, and the different techniques used to examine motion in a legible manner.
The workshop will provide the essentials and tools for all participants to develop their creativity, focusing on listening, observation and communication through movement, by carrying out group work and living a social experience. In this sense, no previous knowledge is necessary, and various features will be combined to adapt the workshop to people with beginner, intermediate or semi-professional levels, and those of different ages.
Participants are requested to commit themselves to attending all of the classes so as to avoid upsetting the group dynamics.
Youness Khoukhou
Youness Khoukhou was born in Sa, Morocco in 1984. He began to do breakdancing at the age of 18 in Marrakesh, where he grew up and trained in contemporary dance with Anania. In 2006, he moved to Tunisia to study at the Mediterranean Center for Contemporary Dance in Tunis (C.M.D.C.). At the same time, he began studying psychomotor skills and bodily expression at the Centre Lafaurie Monbadon in France, with Jacques Garros. After that, he moved to Belgium in 2008 to study at P.A.R.T.S., a contemporary dance school in Brussels. In 2012, he created the 111-1 collective (Radouan Mriziga, Youness Khoukhou, José Paulo dos Santos & Mohamed Toukabri). Amongst others, he has worked with Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker, Claire Croizé and Pierre Droulers (Suns). With the momentum created by Charleroi Danse, he created his first group piece, “Becoming,” as a choreographer for DANSEUR 2015. His first solo, “Noon,” co-produced by Charleroi Danse, was created in September of 2017. He created a group piece called “Body Dialogue,” which was presented at La Raffinerie, the Kaaitheater and other venues in February of 2018.

FLIPAS
This laboratory of urban cultures is a project that came about three years ago at the Naves del Matadero - Centro Internacional de Artes Vivas, with the support of the Goethe Institut and the Alliance Française. At this fourth edition, the project has continued in its same form in order to share urban culture practices with youths, regarding these from a very broad, integrating perspective. It is intended to become a space in which artistic forms of expression like breakdancing, the spoken word and graffiti, among others, are understood to be ways to articulate new dialogues aimed at social cohesiveness. The main goal is to share urban forms of artistic expression from different countries, thus promoting and enhancing the value of these cultures.
This year, it has also received support from AC/E, the Casa San Cristóbal of the Montemadrid Foundation, La Casa Encendida, the Czech Center of Madrid, the Polish Culture Institute, the Iberian-American Institute of Finland, Istituto Italiano di Cultura, Embassy of Belgium, Embassy of Canada, Universidad Carlos III de Madrid, the Leganés Municipal Government, Casa Árabe and the Istituto Europeo di Design (IED Madrid), as well as others.
