On Thursday, May 29, Casa Árabe will be screening this 2025 Oscar-winning documentary in Madrid, as part of the anniversary marking the recognition of the State of Palestine by Spain. The screening will be followed by a colloquium.
Basel Adra, a young Palestinian activist from Masafer Yatta, in the West Bank, has been fighting since childhood against the mass expulsion of his community by the Israeli authorities. He has documented the slow-motion eradication of villages in his home region, where soldiers deployed by the Israeli government gradually demolish houses and expel their inhabitants. At one point, he meets Yuval, an Israeli journalist, who supports him in his efforts.
This is the documentary which won the Oscar for Best Documentary in 2025 and, for many, is the most relevant of the year. It constitutes an act of creative resistance in the search for justice in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, delving into a historic conflict at its worst, in a film that possesses many layers, a great deal of humanity and as much hope as one can possibly have at a time like this.
One year ago, on May 28, 2024, Spain, Slovenia, Ireland and Norway joined the 143 out of all 193 United Nations members that recognize Palestine as a State.
The screening will be followed by a discussion about the the film's content, taking into account both its relevance on the cinema scene and its importance as a testimonial about the pressing situation endured by the Palestinian people today. The colloquium can be watched live on YouTube.
