Casa Árabe is hosting this series of workshops to discover the traditional Palestinian dance known as the dabke, to be held at its Madrid headquarters on Saturday mornings from May 24 through July 5. Sign up now!

Known for its lively, rhythmic movements, the dabke is so much more than just a style of choreography. It is a form of expression that connects people to their land, traditions and community. As a traditional dance from the region of the Arab Levant, it has come to symbolize resistance and freedom in Palestine, in a manner similar to the traditional dances used in South Africa to resist apartheid. More than just a form of dance, it has become a symbol of identity, community and resistance.

In Palestine, it represents cultural resistance, unity and a bond with the land. Within a global context in which access to Palestinian culture is mediated by the conflicts and tensions of the occupation of the Palestinian people’s territory, coupled with the severity of the attacks and destruction taking place since October 7, 2023, the knowledge and practice of this dance allows for a different approach to this cultural heritage cultural, through the lenses of art and community.

“Steps for Palestine: Dabke through the Diaspora” is a series of workshops that seeks to promote and increase awareness about the dabke as one of the forms of cultural expression best representing Palestine. Throughout this series of seven theoretical/practical sessions, not only will we be learning about the technique and movements in this type of dance, but we will also be forming a space for reflection on the value of performing arts in Palestine and among its diaspora, highlighting its role in the preservation of cultural identity and its ability to tell stories and pass on values.

Those taking part will get the chance to learn about the essential steps and movements in this dance, as well as the history of this art form. With their technical skills, the teachers will also be exploring the meaning and cultural contexts surrounding this dance, turning it into an all-encompassing experience.

Their goal is to pay homage to the culture of the dabke, as a symbol of identity, resistance and unity in Palestine. The event series was designed to highlight the importance of cultural practices as a bridge between peoples, strengthening intercultural dialogue, while promoting mutual understanding.

Intended audience members
The workshop series is being presented as an introductory educational initiative, intended especially for people with little or no prior knowledge of the dabke, but who are interested in learning the basics about this dance, as part of a cultural immersion process. Unlike a specialized dance group focusing on forming a strong permanent group with a performative approach, “Steps for Palestine” seeks to create an open space for exploring dance as a tool for cultural dialogue.

Directed towards anyone interested in Arab culture and the performing arts, it will combine practical learning with an immersion into the history and symbolism of this traditional dance.

Structure
The two-hour workshops will consist of a theoretical portion that addresses the various dimensions and varieties of the dabke, followed by a choreographed section in which participants will gradually acquire knowledge about the different techniques and practice the different steps.

The project will end with a final participatory presentation in July, in which participants share what they have learned in an open and inclusive space, in a meeting with dabke groups that dance the dabke and the general public.
