On Friday, July 4, come watch the choreographic performance prepared by the participants in our workshops titled “Steps for Palestine: Dabke Through the Diaspora,” taught by Francisco Montero Lahsen.
The dabke is a dance known for its jumping, footsteps and synchronized movements. Its history is linked to the Palestinian people through their land, traditions and community. During our series of workshops on this type of dance, titled “Steps for Palestine: Dabke Through the Diaspora,” organized by Casa Árabe over the last six weeks, under the guidance of Prof. Francisco Montero Lahsen, those taking part have been learning everything about this dance, from the technical challenges it poses to an understanding of the dance from historical and political perspectives. Through these sessions, they have had the opportunity to understand how the dabke has become a dance that operates as a symbol of identity, community and resistance for Palestinians and their diaspora.
The exhibition, to be presented on the evening of July 4 at 8:00 p.m. in Casa Árabe’s Exhibition Hall, will showcase the results achieved by the participants throughout the workshop series, by performing an original choreography. It will be showing the steps and movements of the “Karadiye” style, inspired by the activities which peasants carry out during the harvest season, as well as their poetry.
The exhibit is being held in conjunction with the work ”Threads of the Diaspora” on display in the same room and made from pieces created by participants in the Palestinian embroidery workshops during the academic year of 2024-25, including both the front of a traditional dress from Gaza and the “Dreams of a Palestinian Garden Without Rubble,” in addition to more than two hundred pieces sent in and donated by the public from different locations.
