On Wednesday, April 22, Prof. Eva Lapiedra from the University of Alicante will be giving the second conference in the series “Seven Women Talk About Al-Andalus.” This time around, we will be exploring what forms motherhood took on during the era of Al-Andalus.

This conference will be devoted to analyzing various aspects of motherhood in Al-Andalus. We will be discussing the status held by mothers and their role in society as seen through the lens of well-known women in Al-Andalus, as well as the significance of factors such as breastfeeding and the ways in which mothers passed values on to their children.

Eva Lapiedra is a tenured professor and the academic coordinator of the bachelor’s degree program in Arabic and Islamic Studies (Department of Integrated Philology) at the University of Alicante, and Vice Dean of International Relations and Mobility within the Dean’s team at that university’s School of Philosophy and Letters.

She has taught and continues to teach various courses related with the history and culture of classical Islam and with the topic of women in the Arab and Islamic world. Her fields of research mainly include: classical Arab-Islamic terminology and ideology; Islamic-Christian relations as reflected in texts; the transmission of Arab and Muslim historical-literary narratives to Latin Christian contexts; terminology, ideology and the image of Otherness; and Arab and Muslim women: terminology, privacy and spaces.

She has served as coordinator of the project “Maintenance, expansion and improvement of the Arab-Islamic Educational Blog,” approved and funded by the Institute of Educational Sciences (ICE) and the University of Alicante’s Vice-Rectorate for Strategic Planning and Quality(academic years of 2007–2008 through 2013–2014). She has contributed at various international conferences and seminars.
