For the last four months of the year, Casa Árabe has organized a variety of workshops to explore Palestinian cultural heritage. Discover and practice embroidery (tatreez) and traditional Palestinian dance (dabke). Sign up now!

Within a global context in which access to Palestinian culture is shaped by the conflicts and tensions arising from the occupation of its territory, compounded by the severity of the attacks and destruction since October 7, 2023, studying and practicing Palestinian cultural heritage provides a different perspective on that heritage, through art and community.

To promote this sort of cultural engagement, Casa Árabe is has organized the following events at its Madrid headquarters in the upcoming weeks:

- Master class and display of Palestinian dance (dabke). Saturday, September 27 from 4:30 to 8:30 p.m. Tickets and further information

Known for its lively, rhythmic movements, the dabke is so much more than just a style of choreography. It is a form of expression that connects people to their land, traditions and community. As a traditional dance from the region of the Arab Levant, it has come to symbolize resistance and freedom in Palestine, in a manner similar to the traditional dances used in South Africa to resist apartheid. More than just a form of dance, it has become a symbol of identity, community and resistance. In Palestine, it represents cultural resistance, unity and a bond with the land.

- Palestinian (tatreez) embroider workshops with three Palestinian embroiderers who are refugees in Spain. The sessions will be held on the dates of October 3, 10, 17 and 24 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Further information. SOLD OUT.

- Embroider Palestine onto your clothes. Two sessions at which you will learn to apply Palestinian embroidery, or tatreez to clothing and accessories. Saturday, October 4 and Sunday, October 5, from 11:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Further information. SOLD OUT.

The art of tatreez, traditional Palestinian embroidery, declared since 2021 to be a form of Intangible Immaterial Heritage by UNESCO, is a Palestinian folk art traditionally practiced by women. It has now become a symbol of Palestinian culture, identity and resistance. A space for interaction shared along with similar customs and artistic practices from other regions in the Arab world and Mediterranean. Tatreez was used to decorate dresses, with specific shapes, colors and motifs that helped identify the region and place where they were woven in historic Palestine.
