From March 20, 2013 until April 03, 2013
On Wednesday, April 3 in Madrid, will be the presentation of the second edition of this work by Leopoldo Ceballos on the international city of Tangier, a shelter for spies, refuge for exiles and promise land for artists.
Attending the event along with the author will be Eduardo López Busquets, General Director of Casa Árabe; Jacobo Israel Garzón, a writer and historian; Domingo del Pino, a journalist and writer, and Manuel Pimentel, Director of the publishing firm Almuzara.
The presentation of the book, published by Almuzara, will take place at the Casa Árabe Auditorium in Madrid (c/ Alcalá, 62) at 7:00 p.m., with free entry until the room’s capacity is full.
A shelter for spies, smugglers and the uprooted, a refuge for exiles and emigrants, a promise land for professionals, artists, industrialists and merchants… the international city of Tangier is more than just a myth. All these people yearned to find security, freedom, opportunities or the peace they could not enjoy in their countries of origin inside this city. Muslims, Jews, Christians and Hindus coexisted within the city’s walls with respect and tolerance, along with people from the widest range of nationalities.
All of these circumstances, as well as the countless texts and films, contributed to the birth of the myth of Tangier which, today, more than fifty years later, lives on in the mind of Tangier’s residents, who have spread around the world in a diaspora, as well as the minds of those who remained in the city. This book provides a faithful account of the rich history and different factors which contributed to Tangier’s exceptional status as a city-state, which will never again be repeated.
He lived his entire childhood and most of his youth in Tangier. Holding a doctorate in Law, he is also a commercial technician and State economist. He practiced Law in Tangier for five years, until 1962, the year when he moved to Madrid. Since then, he has performed his professional activity mainly in the foreign sector, having held different positions in the Spanish Administration and in several public and private entities and companies, both in Spain and abroad. He has been an economic and commercial advisor for the Embassies of Spain in Algiers, Tunis, Copenhagen, Oslo, Vilnius and Tel Aviv (with competence in Palestine). He has been a professor at Icade and the Director of the Advanced Foreign Trade Course. He is the author of the Dictionary of International Economic Organizations.
The presentation of the book, published by Almuzara, will take place at the Casa Árabe Auditorium in Madrid (c/ Alcalá, 62) at 7:00 p.m., with free entry until the room’s capacity is full.
