“Bashir Lazhar” at Casa de America

This monologue by the company “Los endebles,” from the Teatro La Capilla in Mexico City, is being performed on October 13.

Fleeing the violence in his country, Bashir Lazhar, an Algerian immigrant to Canada, is hired at an elementary school as a substitute teacher. In addition to suffering from culture shock, he is faced with the injustice and misunderstanding of school authorities, who do not look kindly upon his unconventional teaching methods. Because Bashir Lazhar believes in an education based on dignity and justice, and he believes the main problem among students is being able to deal with their own limitations and fight their sadness. The play is an ode to life, love and the free expression and formation of thought, filled with sweetness and humor.

The performance, to be held at 7:00 p.m., forms part of the schedule of activities in the 2020 edition of Circular: Second Iberian-American Theater Meeting in Madrid. The project has the support of the Mexican Cultural Institute in Spain and will be carried out in accordance with all of the proper health measures in terms of capacity and prevention.
