Drawing for tickets to the preview of “The Daughters of the Caliphate” in Madrid and Barcelona

“The Daughters of the Caliphate (Rabia)” is Mareike Engelhard’s debut feature film, based on a true story that explores the dark corners of extremism and the struggle for freedom. An exciting feminist thriller that reveals one aspect of the Islamic State never seen before on screen: the inside of houses for women destined to become Daesh fighter wives.

The film was presented as part of the Official Selection of the FFA (Angoulême Francophone Film Festival) and at the “War on Screen” Festival (the only film festival entirely dedicated to reflection on war conflicts and their consequences), having won the Ornano-Valenti Award in Deauville.

Written by the director along with Samuel Doux (the screenwriter of films such as Laurent Cantet’s Arthur Rambo or Farid Bentoumi’s Rouge), the movie tells a true and terrifying story: the story of Moroccan Faitha Mejjati (aka Oum Adam), who ruled several women’s homes with an iron fist during the reign of the Islamic State in Raqqa, Syria.

The film stars Megan Northam (The Night Passengers or A Summer with Fifi) and Lubna Azabal (Incendies, The Blue Caftan and Adam), with the collaboration of Natacha Krief (Night Call), Lena Lauzemis (Deutschland 89), Christine Gautier (Teddy) and Andranic Manet (The Mountain and Suprême NTM).

Summary
Driven by the promise of a new life, Jessica, a young French woman, travels to Syria to join Daesh. In the city of Raqqa, she is welcomed to a house where women from all over the world are waiting to become wives of the fighters. Jessica soon gains the trust of “Madame,” the charismatic, feared director of the site, who exerts a fascinating and dangerous influence over her. This relationship, marked by submission and control, pushes Jessica beyond her own limits, confronting her with an increasingly dark reality.
