Maribel Gutiérrez, the director of Sexto Mario and contributor to Casa Árabe in Cordoba, has passed away

The archeologist and public informer passed away in Cordoba on January 5. She created and was responsible for the "Workshops with History," as well as our dramatized tours of the Casa Mudéjar, along with other initiatives.

CóRDOBA
Maribel Gutiérrez, with a degree in History and specializing in Archeology, completed her doctoral thesis on the Roman Temple for imperial worship in Cordoba, to which she later devoted important works, as she also did on the Salón Rico at the Medina Azahara site, with a comprehensive archeological tracking of how materials were replaced on its façade.

In 2012 she created the public outreach company Sexto Mario, in order to make the historical and archeological heritage of the city better known to locals and visitors, and in a different way. At Sexto Mario, she worked to design and organize workshops and tours on the main monuments and institutions in the city (including Medina Azahara, the Archeology Museum and Casa Árabe), as well as organizing, designing and developing the Kalendas Festival in Cordoba and creating a new dynamic for the Funerary World Interpretation Center located in the mausoleums of the Paseo de la Victoria, in Puerta Gallegos.

Her collaboration with Casa Árabe began in 2015, as part of the Ramadan Nights program, growing more intense in 2017 with a series of workshops in which children and youth audiences got the chance to learn about characteristic elements of the Cordoba of the Caliphate first-hand. As of then, due to her professionalism and eagerness to inform the public, the offering of activities expanded very successfully until her unexpected and premature death.

She was the heart and soul of several dramatized performances, including the "Arrabal de Saqunda Event," the arrival of Abd al-Rahman al-Dahil in Cordoba, the puppet show "Abbás Ibn Firnás, a genius with wings," and (as well as many other initiatives) the video tale "Three Friends from Qurtuba," a mystery set in eleventth-century Cordoba which tested the value of friendship... Friendship, science and the public dissemination of information for which we have now been orphaned. Maribel, through your tireless work, you have taught us about the history and legacy of Cordoba, a legacy that you form part of, as we remember you today with sadness in our hearts.

Thank you for this journey and for your generosity.
