From May 19 to 22, Casa Árabe will be hosting this AAIWG international summer conference, dealing with the historical figure Ibn Rushd and his influence on medieval Latin philosophy, exploring the connections between Al-Andalus thought and Scholasticism within the context of the 900th anniversary of his birth.
Casa Árabe will be one of the two venues for the international summer conferences organized by the Aquinas and the Arabs International Working Group (AAIWG), devoted to the study of Averroes (Ibn Rushd) and his impact on the Latin philosophical tradition. This event is being held as part of the commemoration of the 900th anniversary of the birth of the philosopher from Al-Andalus (1126–2026) and has been organized by the University of Cordoba, with the cooperation of Casa Árabe.
The conference will bring together international specialists to analyze Ibn Rushd’s thinking from historical and philosophical perspectives, with special attention placed on his reception in the medieval Latin world and his influence on Scholasticism. The event in Cordoba forms part of an international academic program that will continue in Paris, reinforcing the transnational nature of the study of Averroism.
Over the course of four days, the program will address central issues such as logic, metaphysics, natural philosophy, and the exegesis of Averroes’s thought, as well as his dialogue with other intellectual traditions. The sessions will combine academic presentations with opportunities for debate, thus fostering exchanges between established researchers and young specialists.
The congress is dedicated to the memory of Prof. Alfred L. Ivry (1935–2026), a leading specialist in medieval Arab and Jewish philosophy and in the work of Ibn Rushd, whose contribution has been fundamental to the development of these studies.
Schedule
The congress in Cordoba will feature more than twenty presentations focusing on various aspects of Averroes’ thought, including:
- Logic and theory of knowledge
- Metaphor, language and philosophical exegesis
- Nature philosophy and climate theory
- Individuation and metaphysics
- The relationship between philosophy and the Qur’anic text
Specialists
In addition to other specialists, it will include participation by:
Abigail Whalen, Alessandro Mulieri, Brahim Bourchachene, David Twetten, Feriel Bouhafa, Ivonne María Acuña Macouzet, Jamie Turner, Josep Puig Montada, Karen Taliaferro, Luis Xavier López-Farjeat, Maryam Al-Sayyed, Mercedes Rubio, Michael Chase, Mostafa Najafi, Peter Hartman, Safia Zghal, Salima Zouaghi, Seyedali Taghavinasab, Terry Kleven, Worod Al-Musawi and Yehuda Halper.
