To mark the ninth centennial of the birth of Averroes (Ibn Rushd), Casa Árabe is hosting this international conference at its Córdoba headquarters from April 27 to 29, with the participation of internationally renowned experts.
Casa Árabe is hosting this international congress devoted to the historical figure Averroes (Ibn Rushd), one of the most influential thinkers in the intellectual history of the Mediterranean, as part of the commemoration of the ninth centennial of his birth (1126–2026). Over the course of three days, well-known specialists from universities and research centers in Europe, the United States, the Arab world and Latin America will be gathering in Cordoba to analyze his legacy from an interdisciplinary perspective.
The purpose of the event is to provide an in-depth examination of the historical, philosophical, scientific and legal context in which Ibn Rushd’s work was carried out, as well as its impact on later traditions. Through five themed sessions, the congress will address key issues such as legal thought and legal theory in Al-Andalus, the relationship between philosophy and theology (kalām), logic and epistemology, the natural and medical sciences, as well as the reception and transmission of his work in Hebrew and Latin contexts.
The program will bring together a distinguished group of international experts, including Delfina Serrano, Cristina Cerami, José Bellver, Fouad Ben Ahmed, Catarina Belo, Richard C. Taylor and Maribel Fierro- whose research has helped revitalize the study of Islamic philosophy and its impact on global intellectual history.
Throughout the congress, Averroes’ unique ability to articulate reason and revelation will be highlighted, as well as his role in the transmission of Aristotelianism and his decisive influence on Latin scholasticism and medieval philosophy. Similarly, lesser-known aspects of his work will be explored, such as his medical thinking, his concept of science and his political stance within the Almohad context.
This conference forms part of the activities in the Universo Averroes program, which highlights the Cordoban philosopher as historical figure who built a bridge between cultures and intellectual traditions, focusing on his importance in contemporary debates about knowledge, rational thought and peaceful co-existence.
