In September 2021, we will be celebrating the tenth anniversary of our wonderful headquarters in Cordoba. Do not miss out on the schedule of events we have organized to celebrate the occasion.

The Casa Mudéjar building is a set of five different houses linked together by corridors, passageways and stairwells, with four courtyards and a turret. The original building dates back to the fourteenth century, though most of the current structures are from the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries. It is located within the southern part of the Historical Center of Cordoba, near the Mosque-Cathedral, within the area declared to be a World Heritage Site.

Most notable are its fifteenth-century mural paintings, two-thirds of which are attributed to the painter Pedro Romana, and one of the finest examples of the scarce Mudéjar painting that has been left behind and found in the city. It is a recent finding which dates back to 1928, a time when the house was being prepared to house the Archeological Museum of Cordoba.

The Spanish State’s Directorate General of Heritage ceded the historical building to Casa Árabe for use as its Cordoba headquarters, and eventually the refurbishment and adaptation work on Casa Mudéjar to become Casa Árabe’s headquarters, directed by the Municipal Government of Cordoba itself, was awarded the World Heritage City Prize of 2011, bestowed by Spain’s Ministry of Education, Culture and Sports.

Do not miss out on the full schedule of events we have organized to celebrate the occasion. Wednesday, September 15 at 8:30 p.m., we will be hosting the concert “Sonore al-Ándalus,” a show in which Arab and Spanish music are merged, thus showing off the strong legacy of Arab culture in our music from the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. The performance will feature the masterful voice of soprano Isabel Cañada, who will be accompanied by pianist Elías Romero.

The activities will continue on Thursday, September 16, at 7:30 p.m., with a conference on the Casa Mudéjar, headquarters of the Archaeological Museum of Cordoba, given by the museum’s director, María Dolores Baena. With her, we will unravel the history of this fascinating fourteenth-century building up to its most recent past. This activity will be held at Casa Árabe’s headquarters and will be broadcast live on our YouTube channel and on Facebook Live.

Last but not least, on Saturday, September 18 at 7:00 p.m., we will be opening the Casa up for a dramatized tour, in which we will take a look at the different decorative features and enlargements of our space along with one of the families who lived in this Cordoban architectural gem. The tour has been organized in conjunction with SextoMario, a team of professionals with extensive historical and archeological training in Cordoba, and long-standing experience in teaching and increasing awareness.

Moreover, we will continue to give the guided tours of the Casa Mudéjar which we have planned for the remainder of the year. On the upcoming date of October 22, visitors will get a first-hand glimpse of the different artistic styles in the building, including the Mudéjar, Gothic and Baroque, as well as other original architectural elements that have remained in place despite the various uses this unique space has been given.
