The Moroccan oud player will be performing with a sextet as part of The White Night of Flamenco, with which Casa Árabe is cooperating yet again this year. It will be taking place in the early hours of June 21 to 22.
At his concert, the musician will be presenting his latest album, “Aficionado: -Flamenco Moro,” in which he mixes two musical traditions that are geographically and culturally close with both naturalness and ease.
Strongly influenced by the classical Arabic musical culture, Zouiten knows flamenco through master Paco de Lucia. Since then, he has become an “aficionado” who rediscovers his own roots, as well as the musical similarities and connections between both cultures. The result of his discovery is this album, an omnipresent celebration of flamenco and Moorish-Andalusian music from Morocco.
With pieces composed by Zouiten in Granada and on his numerous trips to Andalusia, the album “Aficionado: Flamenco Moro” advocates for a transcultural sound environment in which styles blend organically. Thus, a “fandango” may well pave the way for an ancient Andalusian song such as the “nuba”; a “tango” may sound rhythmically North African and harmonically jazzy; or an Arab “samai” may lead to a “soleá flamenca.” Borders fall away and clear the horizon for a festive musical experience, in which the musicians become one with the audience before the infinite beauty of the music.
Born in 1985 in Casablanca, Morocco and based in Berlin, Germany, Alaa Zouiten is a German-Moroccan oud player, composer and curator of several fusion music projects and festivals.
Trained as a teacher on the Arabic oud at the National Conservatory of Marrakesh, he holds a degree in Music Education and Philosophy from the University of Erfurt (2013) and a Master’s degree in Transcultural Music Studies from the Franz Liszt Hochschule für Musik in Weimar. In 2012, he released his debut album, “Hada Makan,” in collaboration with with talented musicians from Thuringen, with whom he formed the “Alaa Zouiten Ensemble.” Thanks to a grant from the Arab Fund for Arts and Culture, Alaa Zouiten worked on his second album, “Talking Oud” (2015), in which he experimented with the technical and aesthetic stylistic possibilities of the Arabic oud. The result was a fascinating blend of Arab-Andalusian music and jazz-rock.
Throughout his career, he has worked with musicians from diverse backgrounds and musical styles, with the goal of creating a modern soundscape inspired by all the world’s traditions. In his compositions and arrangements, there are no hierarchies of styles or cultures. His Arabic oud speaks different musical languages, and for Zouiten it is only the beauty of the music that counts.
Zouiten has also curated several cross-cultural musical projects and events such as the Gnaoua Festival Berlin (2018 and 2019), the concert series Arab Song Jam (since 2017); as well as “Zouiten&Friends” (since 2020). Other important milestones in his career include musical direction and performance with “Global Arabian Music Orchestra” at the Berlin Philharmonic Hall, a performance at the Festival Jazz au Chellah - Rabat (2014 and 2019), the Flamenco Biennial of Seville (Sept 2020) with “Aficionado- Flamenco Moro,” the “Talking Oud 2020/2021” tours in France, Germany, Spain and Morocco and the UK tour with “Making Tracks 2022.”
